Uomini veri è un film di Philip Kaufman del 1983.
La pellicola è tratta dal romanzo di Tom Wolfe La stoffa giusta (The Right Stuff), uscito nel 1979.

The Right Stuff is a 1983 American film adapted from Tom Wolfe's 1979 book The Right Stuff about the test pilots who were involved in high-speed aeronautical research at Edwards Air Force Base as well as those selected to be astronauts  for Project Mercury, the United States' first attempt at manned spaceflight.

Basata su un libro di Tom Wolfe, sceneggiato dal regista dopo aver rinunciato a un primo script di William Goldman, è la storia dei piloti di guerra che dal 1947 divennero i collaudatori dei nuovi jet (e in particolare di Chuck Yeager che il 14-10-1947 superò per primo la barriera del suono e che qui ha un piccolo ruolo di barista) e poi, fino al 1963, dei sette uomini che avevano la “giusta stoffa” per essere i primi esploratori USA dello spazio nel programma astronautico Mercury della NASA. Costato 25 milioni di dollari (fu un ingente fiasco commerciale per la Warner), è un'apprezzabile miscela di documentarismo ricostruito e cinema d'azione, cronaca ed epopea con una strana struttura rapsodica che nell'ultima ora diventa ripetitiva, ma la forza spettacolare, la varietà dei toni, la sagacia del disegno psicologico, la scelta e la direzione degli attori (specialmente Shepard come Yeager) riscattano ampiamente i suoi difetti. È un buon film nazionalista, corretto con i sali dell'umorismo e dell'ironia di cui fa le spese in particolare Lyndon Johnson, vicepresidente di John Kennedy. C'è la più divertente scena di masturbazione (obbligata) raccontata al cinema. Oscar per la musica (Bill Conti).



The story contrasts the "Mercury Seven" and their families with pilots like Chuck Yeager, who was considered by many test pilots to be the best of them all, but was never selected as an astronaut. The Mercury Seven were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. In some aspects of the film its makers undertook great efforts to make it historically accurate. In others, they took some artistic license, downplaying and sometimes even ridiculing the collective scientific and technical effort of the Mercury program, emphasizing instead the individual adventure and heroism of the test pilots and astronauts.
